No special centre for 2016 UTME, says JAMB

Lagos – The Joint Admissions and Matriculation
Board (JAMB), Sunday, said it would not create
any special centre for the 2016 Unified Tertiary
Matriculation Examination (UTME).
The UTME, which will be Computer Base Test
(CBT) mode all through, is expected to begin on
Monday, Feb. 29.
In a statement by Head, Media and Information
of the board, Dr Fabian Benjamin, said the
attention of the board was drawn to protests by
some alleged prospective candidates in Edo and
Lagos states over the closure of the board’s
registration portal in preparation to the UTME.   
“The board sincerely sympathises with the
plight of these prospective candidates.
CANDIDATES WRITING UTME IN ABUJA
“It is indeed the wish of the board that the
Nigerian youth desirous of tertiary education are
given ample opportunity to register for its
examination.
“This is why it began the sale of its application
document in August 2015, which is about seven
months ago.
“In the advertisement for the sale of the
registration documents, the board clearly stated
that the sales would close by January.
“But due to public appeal it extended the
registration process to February,” the statement
read in part.
The board further stated that it could not allow
candidates to register perpetually, adding that it
had a time table and it adheres strictly to it.
It noted that this was to allow tertiary
institutions to begin admission processes early.
“We all must work to enshrine the culture of
discipline in the system and ensure that tertiary
institutions calendars are not truncated.
“It is most unfortunate that some candidates
waited until our website was withdrawn before
making attempts to register,” the board stated.
It noted that every aspiring candidate was
expected to know the procedure as proper
publicity involving the media was done.
More than one million candidates have so far
registered for the examination on the all CBT
platform within and outside the country.
More than 500 centres were also accredited for
the conduct of the examination within and
outside Nigeria. (NAN)

GENOCIDE: Mass Graves Of Murdered Pro-Biafra Protesters Uncovered In Aba (PHOTOS)

A mass grave of massacred pro-Biafra agitators has been discovered near Aba, the economic capital of Abia State.

The International Society for Civil Liberties & the Rule of Law (Intersociety) announced the shocking discovery in part two of its letter to Minister of Interior, Federal Ministry of Interior, Abdulrahman Bello Dambazzzau, and Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Abayomi Gabriel Olonisakin.

Intersociety said in the part two of the letter released this morning that it has already visited the mass grave and that Amnesty International has equally done same. Below are excerpts of the letter signed by Board Chairman, Emeka Umeagbalasi, and Head, Civil Liberties & Rule of Law Programme, Obianuju Joy Igboeli, Esq.:

“In the first part of the letter, circulated to the media two days ago, we had peripherally  informed that the soldiers of the 144 Battalion in Ukwa West LGA of Abia State, joined by personnel of the Abia State Police Command and the Finance & Logistics Command of the Nigerian Navy in Owerre-Nta in Abia State had on 9th of February 2016 stormed the premises of the National High School in Aba and opened fire at members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) who gathered in their hundreds for the purpose of holding prayer/meeting. The named security forces shot and killed 22 IPOB members and critically injured over 30. The IPOB members had gathered in the school on account of suggestion made to them by the same Abia State Police Command and other security heads during their previous meetings to “restrict their processions, rallies or protests to public places other than streets and roads so as not to attract the attention and violent reactions of the Federal Government”. The first part of the letter of ours under reference is contained in the following HERE.

“We also reported that  among the 22 murdered citizens or IPOB members in the said Aba Prayer/Meeting of 9th of February 2016 were: Uche Friday (30yrs), from Asa in Abia State; Emeka Ekpemandu (35yrs), from Owerre Nkwoji in Imo State; Chiavoghi Chibuikem (Obingwa in Abia State); Nzubechi Onwumere (Orlu in Imo State); Peter Chinemerem Ukasoanya (27yrs), from Isialangwa North in Abia State, Chigozie Cyril Nwoye (23yrs), from Umuna in Ezeagu, Enugu State; Chukwudi Onyekwere (26yrs), from Aboh Mbaise in Imo State; and  Chibuzor Maduagwu (28yrs), from Amauzari in Mbano, Imo State and that the remaining 8 dead bodies of murdered IPOB members and 5 critically injured others at the point of death were taken away by soldiers of 144 Battalion of the Nigerian Army.  The 144 Battalion is commanded by Lt Col Kasim Umar Sidi. The Abia State Police Command had earlier admitted publicly of shooting and killing two IPOB members (“for disturbing students of the National High School in Aba”). The Command is presently and officially in possession of the two dead IPOB members it shot and killed.

“Massacre Of 22 Citizens & Dumping Of 13 Bodies In Borrow Pit: It is our information to Minister of Interior, Retired Gen Bello Abdulrahman Dambazzau, PhD, Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Abayomi Gabriel Olonisakin, members of the international community, international rights and media community and all Nigerians that the combined team of soldiers of the 144 Battalion located in Asa, Ukwa Ngwa West LGA of Abia State under the command of Lt Col Kasim Umar Sidi and the personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, Abia State Command, headed by CP Habila Hosea (08037025670); aided by Aba Area Commander, ACP Peter Nwagbara (08184087787) and joined by personnel of the Nigerian Navy Command (Finance & Logistics Command), Owerre-Nta in Abia State had on 9th of February 2016, shot and killed 22 unarmed, innocent and non violent members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) at the National High School along Port Harcourt Road in Aba, Abia State. The security forces had stormed the School on the said date in over ten Hilux vans at about 12: noon.

“Over 30 other members of the IPOB were also shot and critically injured at the scene. Out of the 22 murdered citizens, eight were identified after the shooting and killing spree by other members of the IPOB and sympathisers; some of them died on their way to hospital following excess bleeding and excruciating pains. Two of the 22 murdered IPOB members were taken away by the Abia State Police Command and the remaining 8; alongside 5 critically injured others were packed in two military trucks and taken away by soldiers.

Obasanjo won’t escape Buhari’s probe -Oseni

Contrary to what many Nigerians feel that the anti-corruption campaign of the Muhammadu Buhari administration is targeted at his predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan, a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, and sitting senator, retired Lt-General Jeremiah Useni says that this is not the case.

He stated that the administration will soon go after Jonathan’s predecessor, former president Olusegun Obasanjo, as soon as it is done with the Jonathan years.

Useni who is also a former military governor of the old Bendel State, now representing Plateau South in the National Assembly, in an interview reiterated the view expressed by his colleague, Dino Melaye, that Obasanjo “brought corruption to the National Assembly with the way he was giving out money to senators especially when he wanted to go for third term. He spent a lot of money he can’t account for.”

According to the lawmaker, “What Buhari is doing now, is like what Awolowo said when he was Minister of Finance under General Gowon and the government then put up a probe and wanted to go backward to past government. But Awolowo said no; new logs go on top of old ones, to get to the old ones; you must remove the new ones first.

“That is what Buhari is doing now, trying to clear the new logs so that he can get access to the old ones; when he clears the new ones and gets access to the old ones, the case of Obasanjo will come up.”

B-haram Attacks: We will not vacate Dalori, monach, residents, vow

of pressure from Boko Haram attacks will compel
them to desert their community and become
refugees in MaiduguriThey insisted that, despite the calamity that
befell them, penultimate Saturday, where over
150 people were allegedly killed and houses
torched by terrorists, they would stay back in
their ancestral home, as death, according to
them, is inevitable in any society.
The stakeholders, including the Borno State
Chairman of the All Progressives Congress
(APC), Alhaji Ali Bukar Dalori, made their
position known at the destroyed palace of the
District Head when Buhari, represented by the
Secretary to the Government of the Federation,
SGF, Mr. Babachir David Lawal, led three
ministers on a condolence visit to Dalori.
The residents also kicked against the digging of
trenches around the community by the military
to protect them from further Boko Haram
attacks, calling on government, particularly
NEMA, to provide them with food items and
rebuild their destroyed houses instead.
“We are grateful for the visit to sympathize
with us over the unfortunate attacks last
Saturday, but we are appealing to government to
stop the ongoing digging of trenches around our
community, because these trenches will prevent
our people whenever there is an attack from
fleeing as an escape route in the community.      
“ We are not going anywhere. This is our land
and we have no other place than Dalori. We are
not against deployment of security personnel to
this community, but my people are strongly
against surrounding them with trenches”, the
APC Chairman said on behalf of the community.
Responding, the SGF said the team was in
Dalori on behalf of Buhari who was on official
foreign trip at the time of the attack, and prayed
God to grant eternal rest to those who lost their
lives in the attacks and wished the injured quick
recovery..

said. Announcing the development on Friday, Dr. Idris, identified the outbreak as febrile rash illnesses (FRI), disclosing that it was recorded in Otodo Gbame community in Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State. He said the victims are said to be within the age range of eight and 72 months. The outbreak was first identified by the Medical Officer
of Health of the LGA on the 9th February, he said.
Dr Idris said his ministry has already notified the
Federal Ministry of Health and the World Health
Organisation (WHO) on the situation.

It has also constituted a team of Epidemiologists to
investigate the outbreak and institute appropriate
measures to prevent further spread of the disease.
But he said although the disease causing the outbreak is
yet to be confirmed, “the signs and symptoms are
suggestive of Febrile Rash Illnesses.”

He added: “Blood samples (and throat swabs) from the patients and water samples from the community have been taken to the Virology Reference Laboratory at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) and Lagos State Drug Quality Control Laboratory (DQCL),
LASUTH, Ikeja respectively. The source of the infection is still under investigation.”

According to Dr. Idris, Otodo Gbame community,
according to Idris is an expansive, sandy riverine, flood prone and camp-lie settlements with an estimated population of 100,000 people.

“The people are mainly Egun, however there are other tribes in the minority. The community is a slum with waste deposited at different spots. There are many scattered shallow wells in the community. The water from the wells is found to be used mostly for bathing, washing and cooking. Majority of the citizen claimed it is not used for drinking but a few said they sometimes drink from the well. The community head Chief Hunpe Dansu confirmed the outbreak of the Febrile Rash illnesses.”

The government is said to be intensifying efforts to
conduct mapping of all slums and blighted areas in the state towards reducing the health hazards associated with such areas. He enjoined the people to join hands with the government in the identification of slums and in ensuring environmental sanitation at all times.

And members of the public and health workers are to report any strange illness to the nearest health facility or call the following lines- 08037170614, 08055281442 and
